Adult Classes

Have fun, get creative and find a new skill (or develop an existing talent) with one of our popular term-time classes. Work with our fully-qualified, experienced tutors in a relaxed environment to learn a variety of techniques and then take your work home with you for everybody to enjoy! Teen Classes

Classes for 12 – 16 year-olds to complement your school studies, develop a new skill or just to have fun.



Our workshops are for age 16+ and all materials are included unless otherwise stated.

Kick Start to Sewing

Saturday 25 Jan, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Have a sewing machine but need help to get started? If so, then Alice and Ginny’s introduction to machine sewing day is for you. During the day you will learn how to set up your machine, create basic stitches and cover basic core skills through the creation of a simple cushion cover. Please note sewing machines must be in good working order. Please also bring your sewing machine manual. If you do not yet have your own machine then please reserve one at booking. All materials provided.

Textiles Block Printing

Saturday 1 Feb, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Spend a day creating beautiful, hand printed textiles. You will design and create your own printing blocks using lino and other materials, and experiment with colour palettes and repeat designs, building up interesting patterns and motifs on products to take home. No experience is necessary.

Nuno Felted Scarf

Sat 8 Feb, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Spend the day creating something special for yourself or as a gift. Fuse voile and soft merino fibres to create a delicate nuno hand felted scarf. Add delicate hand stitching and beading as a finishing touch. Please bring a small towel with you.

An Introduction to Stained Glass

Design, cut and construct your own contemporary leaded glass panel with artist Maggie Beal. Please bring an old shirt or apron, and wear closed shoes, not open-toed sandals! This workshop is not suitable for anyone who is or may be pregnant.

Life Drawing

Sat 15 Feb, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Led by our Artist-in-Residence Stephen Critchley, nude models work through a variety of poses whilst you experiment with different media, including ink and charcoal. All abilities welcome.

Teapot in a day

Spend a wonderfully relaxing day in our Pottery Studio, where tutor Lucy Burley will show you how to make your very own teapot and have a go on the pottery wheel.

Dissolvable Vessels and Pots

Sat 1 Mar, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Join tutor Emma Hobbs for an incredible day using a sewing machine and water soluble fi lm to create sculptural shapes! Build a web of fabrics and thread, before dissolving over 3D forms to make amazing unique vessels. A limited amount of our machines are available to use during this session, please reserve one when booking. Please bring your own sewing machine with you, if you have one, with the ability to free machine embroider. £40 / £30 / £20

Sat 1 Mar, 10.30am – 12.30pm: Up-cycled Jewellery

Learn new techniques to reinvent found objects and clothing. Create yarn to knit with using recycled materials including electrical wiring and old T-shirts to produce interesting accessories and jewellery to take home! No previous experience necessary. £15 / £11.25 / £7.50

Historic Photographic Processes

Sat 8 Mar, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Come and enjoy a fascinating day with tutor Tracey Bridger creating 19th Century style photographic prints without the use of a camera, and exploring techniques such as Cyanotype and Argyrotype. Suitable for all abilities.

Plaiting with willow

Sat 8 Mar, 1pm – 4pm
Basket-maker Judith Needham will show you how willow can be plaited, using a technique borrowed from corn dollies. You will start by making a spiral bird feeder and a little hanging basket, then have time to experiment with the method and try out your own ideas.

Silver ring in a day

Sat 15 Mar, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Using sterling silver sheet to form the basis of your unique ring, tutor Amy Hubbard will teach you traditional jewellery fabrication skills including piercing, soldering, and texture making to design your very own one off creation. This is a class suitable for absolute beginners. Please make sure you wear old clothes or have an apron with you. All tools will be provided and there will be a short while at the beginning of class to come up with designs, however it would be advantageous to come prepared with some rough ideas.

Make your own perfume

Join medical herbalist Janine Gerhardt and learn about the historical use of perfume, its connection to Alchemy,

extraction methods and how to structure a perfume. Become acquainted with a variety of essential and infused oils and consequently design, create & take home your very own bespoke perfume, Eau de Perfume or Eau de Toilette.

Stained Glass: Next steps

Sat 29 Mar, 10.30am – 4.30pm
A workshop for people who want to practice and improve their basic skills, plus experiment with cutting circles as Tutor Maggie Beal shows you how to cut curves. Bring along ideas for your design, and after a quick update on techniques you will have the opportunity to create a small leaded light panel.

Sun prints

Learn how to create photographic images without the need for a camera. Compose fun and interesting prints exposing found objects and images onto photo sensitive paper, then take your prints home to show off your new found photography skills. Suitable for all abilities.

Experimental textiles

Sat 3 May, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Create exciting and experimental textile pieces. Using heat bonding techniques play with fusing fabrics, plastics and papers. Samples can then be machine and hand stitched into, to embellish and enrich the surface. Please bring a selection of thick plastic carrier bags in a variety of colours, machine sewing thread and, if possible, a sewing machine although not essential.

Shibori - Heat setting

Sat 3 May, 10.30am – 12.30pm
Using an innovative heat setting process that sets fabrics into structured shapes, create a textured scarf to take home using this new interpretation of traditional Japanese Shibori techniques. No previous experience is necessary.

Portraits and self-portraits (Beginners)

A fun and interactive day, learning how to take Portraits and Self Portraits using the best source of light available and introducing artificial lighting techniques. Bring your own camera along. Basic Digital Camera and Medium Format Camera handling will be demonstrated.

Silver pendant in a day

Sat 7 Jun, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Using sterling silver sheet, in this day class you will design and make a unique pendant. Tutor Amy Hubbard will teach you techniques including piercing, soldering, texture making and polishing. Please bring old clothes to wear or an apron, and some rough design ideas if you can. If you have a chain at home that you may like to put your pendant on, please bring this with you too. This is a class suitable for complete beginners.

Stake and strand basket

Sat 14 Jun, 10.30am – 5.30pm
Under the guidance of basket maker Judith Needham you will make a round basket with a flat base using the stake and strand technique. This could be a shallow fruit basket or even a waste paper basket, the choice is yours. Returners may want to move on to an oval based basket and perhaps try adding a handle.

Shibori - Indigo dyeing

Sat 21 Jun, 10.30am – 4.30pm
During this experimental, introductory workshop you will be taught a series of Japanese Shibori resist dyeing techniques – which involves clamping and tying cloth – before dyeing it in a bath of traditional indigo dye. You will create beautiful patterns across scarves and samples to take home. No previous experience is necessary.

Forever Young Family Crafts

These sessions, on the second Saturday of every month, provide a fantastic opportunity for families to work together and create something amazing. Make art with your children and grab some precious quality time along the way.

Sessions run from 10.30am – 12.30pm and cost £3 each.

Sat 8 Feb: Decopatch animals

A modern version of Decoupage, gluing and sticking with fantastic results! Come along and pick your favourite animals to transform with lovely patterns.

Sat 8 March: Easter Egg Cups

Make a chicken or a rabbit eggcellent egg cup out of clay! We’ll fi re and glaze it for you.

Sat 10 May: Junkey monkeys

Making recycling fun! Creative ways to use everyday junk around the home to make amazing and beautiful things with your little monkeys.

Sat 14 June: Monoprinting messiness

Get creative printing amazing shapes and colours.


Monthly Makes

Join us in the West End Centre bar on the second Monday of every month for an informal get-together for quick and easy creative projects to take home. Bring a friend or come and make new ones! Each session runs from 7 – 9pm and costs £10 – including all materials plus a glass of wine or soft drink

Mon 10 Feb – Lip balms

Learn how to make a Lip Balm from scratch using the fi nest ingredients. Discover the medicinal properties of beeswax, coco butter, infused oils and a variety of medicinal plants. Prepare a herbal infused oil and choose your own scent for your own personalised Lip Balm.

Mon 10 March – Hand felted jewellery

Make brooches and bracelets using simple felting techniques. Come and learn a new skill whilst creating some unique jewellery pieces.

Mon 12 May – Willow hearts

Use willow and other natural materials to make a woven heart to decorate your home or give as a gift.

Mon 9 June – Bath bombs

Create your own bath bombs! Pick your own colour, scent and decorations. Give as gifts or keep as a lovely treat for yourself.


Sewing Café

Our wonderful free drop-in on the second Tuesday of the month, using our own Janome sewing machines. Tea and cake are available whilst you relax in our bar area and work on your own sewing projects under the watchful eye of Westy tutors Alice Butcher and Ginny Farquhar.

Under the expert guidance of our tutor, Bekki Budd, you can express yourself and be whoever you want to be.
