Pottery for Beginners

Open the door to the amazing world of ceramics with this inspirational one-day course led by tutor Lucy Burley. All items will be fired after the course, for collection before Christmas. You will need to bring with you an old shirt or apron, and wear closed shoes, not open-toed sandals!   

Life Drawing Day

Join our artist in residence, Stephen Critchley, for a relaxed day of drawing. Our model will work through a number of poses while you experiment with various materials including paint and charcoal.

3D Felt Making

Make something functional like a hat or bag, or experiment by creating a sculptural form with local artist, Debi Retallick. Please bring a towel, a plastic bag and inspiration. A variety of colours in merino fleece will be provided and will be included in the workshop cost

Funky Stencilled Doorstop

Spend a relaxing day with Alice & Ginny! Decorate your own fabric using a stencilled motif from a selection provided and whip it up into a useful doorstop. Great to make for yourself but also as a gift for a friend.  

Stained Glass

WARNING: This workshop is not to be trifled with – you’ll have so much fun that it may inspire a career change! Using simple traditional techniques, artist Maggie Beal will teach you how to make a small, contemporary leaded glass panel. Have a go at designing, cutting glass and constructing a panel with lead strips using a soldering iron for the joints. You will need to bring with you an old shirt or apron, and wear closed shoes, not open-toed sandals!

After this course, with willow weaver Judith Needham, you will go home with a gorgeous, rustic handmade basket. Using the frame technique, all materials are provided. Bring your own pair of secateurs.

NEW! Printmaking Taster Day

As an introduction to the fine art of printmaking join artist, Tozzy Bridger, for a great chance to experiment.Try lino cuts, drypoint etchings and emboss prints, all of which will be printed through Tozzy’s portable printing press! Bring along anything that inspires you, printing can be a little messy so please also bring an apron or old shirt to wear.

NEW! Cover up and get organised!

Jazz up a boring old ring binder – make a beautiful cover to transform it into a snazzy organiser, complete with inside pockets for additional storage. Decorate your cover with an image printed onto fabric and add embellishments and wording with buttons, letter stampers and embroidery. You could make a Christmas organiser, a folder for all of your gardening notes, or perhaps one to collect together all of your favourite recipes. The choice is yours!  All fabrics will be provided but please bring any images, fabrics or notions you would like to incorporate. Some sewing skills required.

Learn to make a lovely woven willow platter to use in the kitchen or hang on your wall. All materials provided but feel free to bring recent prunings from your garden to incorporate into your platter. Colourful dogwoods will be particularly effective. With willow weaver, Judith Needham.

Festive Fabric Wreath

Another fun workshop with Alice & Ginny where you will learn how to create a festive wreath from recycled fabrics, felt, beads, wire, and buttons. Techniques covered include making a wire base for a wreath and creating decorations and embellishments. All materials provided, though please feel free to bring with you any fabrics or notions you would particularly like to incorporate into your piece.

Mosaic a Mirror

Make like a Roman… and mosaic! Using tiles or perhaps some recycled crockery, you will spend the day decorating your mirror. Penny Eccles will guide you through the basic techniques of mosaic. Please wear an apron or an old shirt and closed shoes. Materials provided but please feel free to bring along old, chipped and unloved crockery or any other objects which may be of use for incorporating into the mosaic design.

NEW! Printmaking – Christmas Cards and Crafts

Don’t miss out! Enjoy a day of printmaking, producing cards and crafts for Christmas, working with printmaker, Tozzy Bridger. You will make your own rubber stamp prints (perfect for making multiple cards!) and use relief prints to create sheets of wrapping paper to your own design. You can also have a go at embossing techniques and lino cuts. Printing can be a little messy so please bring an apron or old shirt to wear.  

Christmas Stocking

Come and create your own handmade, lined festive Christmas stocking from recycled fabrics. This workshop will focus on design, choosing fabrics, construction, appliqué, hand embroidery and finishing. Basic sewing experience required. Please bring any fabric with you that you would like to recycle… we will provide threads, fabric scraps and all other materials. This workshop is open to all, including young people aged 11 or over who must be accompanied by an adult

Ever fancied having a go at crazy patchwork? Come and join Alice & Ginny for a day’s craziness and learn how to create funky patchwork stars. Make a few, string them together and you have some wonderful bunting to decorate your home this festive season.

All materials provided but if you have scraps of fabric, ribbons, lace or beads you would like to incorporate into your pieces please do bring them in.

 

Every month bring a friend, unwind and have fun at the Monthly Make. These informal sessions will provide you with the space and time to achieve quick, easy and focussed projects that you can take home with you at the end of the evening. Price includes materials, a glass of wine or a soft drink. Advanced booking is highly recommended.

Rocked Out 6

Blowing back into the Westy at the start of the summer holidays Rocket Out 6 turns our world upside down from 10.30am-4pm Mon 2-Fri 6 Aug 2010. Following in the footsteps of the now legendary Rocked Out 1-5 Rocked Out 6 is a five-day course designed to improve the live performance of 14-19 year old musicians, giving them the opportunity to play in a professional band setting whilst learning under the guidance of a collection of this country's leading musicians and tutors.

‘Rocked Out’ provides an invaluable stepping-stone between college and university for young aspiring musicians, and bridges the gap between rehearsals and shows for bands looking to move forward in the music industry. Tickets cost £150 and you can book to join the guitar, drums, bass or vocals 'strands' Places are limited, so please book in advance. S

STUDENTS WISHING TO BOOK A PLACE ON THE COURSE WILL NEED TO HAVE A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO COMPETENTLY PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENT.

If you are in receipt of the following benefits and feel you qualify for this discount you must c book at the West End Centre in personand bring proof of your entitlement:

  • Learners who are asylum seekers in receipt of income-based benefit

WEC concessionary prices can be claimed by anyone in receipt of disability allowance, unemployment benefit or income support. If you feel you qualify for this discount you must come and book at the West End Centre in person and bring proof of your entitlement. For children’s courses concessionary prices applies to the children of those in receipt of state benefits.
