Wessex Film and Sound Archive

Public utilities and government agencies

WFSA holds a number of films made for public utilities like British Gas and Southern Water Authority. These show local installations, such as Hythe gas works and Otterbourne pumping station. Electricity is represented by a large collection of films received from Southern Electric Museum. Whilst these are more general in nature, they nonetheless show the British domestic social scene from the 1940s to 1980s, through promotional films for electrical products and services which affected everyone.

Hampshire Fire Brigade is well represented in the Archive by films showing its activities in Portsmouth and Southampton mainly, as well as general training films from the Second World War period. The Forestry Commission is a Government agency, some of whose films are held in WFSA because of the presence in Hampshire of Forest Research at Alice Holt Forest. Forestry activities and wildlife shown are to be found in local forests like the New Forest.
