We hold over 22,000 cinefilms and video recordings and below are links to a few of them to highlight the wide variety of archive footage we have.

Films on You Tube

We have uploaded many historic films onto our 'Wessex Film and Sound Archive You Tube channel.' There you will find archive footage of school life, towns, the Home Guard, carnivals, launches of famous ships, fetes and much more.

There are four sample clips below (click on the 'i' information button to see more details and a link to the online catalogue entry).

Below are clips from our large collection of films made by Colonel Arthur Bates of Manydown Park in North Hampshire between 1929-1936.

All of the films were shot outdoors to take advantage of natural light using a 16mm camera and featured not just members of his family, but also a fascinating glimpse of local life. There are more films in the collection - AV1153 - which you can learn about via our online catalogue and then either visit us to view in person or order a copy. You can also find out more about Colonel Bates in the AdminHistory section of the catalogue entries.
