Changing the style of the text

Hantsweb specifies a sans serif font style through a style sheet. A sans serif font (such as Verdana or Arial) should be more easily read by those with a visual impairment or dyslexia than seriffed font styles (such as Times New Roman or Georgia). You may wish to impose a different text style through your browser settings. The following steps will also override any styles "hard coded" on other websites.

Step 1: Get your browser to ignore font styles specified by a website.

  • Open the Tools menu with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+T).

  • Select the Internet Options option with the mouse (or by pressing O).

  • Select the Accessibility button with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+E).

  • Check the "Ignore font styles specified on web page" checkbox with the mouse (or by pressing alt+S).

  • Select the OK button twice with the mouse (or by pressing Enter twice).

Step 2: Choose and select a font you like.

  • Open the Tools menu with the mouse ( or by pressing Alt+T).

  • Select the Internet Options option with the mouse ( or by pressing O).

  • Select the "Fonts" button with the mouse ( or by pressing Alt+N).

  • Select a web page font of your choice with the mouse ( or by pressing Alt+W and arrowing through the list).

  • Select the OK button twice with the mouse ( or by pressing Enter twice).

Changing text and background colours

You may wish to impose a different combination of text and background colours than those chosen by us, although we have tried to retain a good contrast at all times. For example, some people may prefer white text on a black background.

The following steps will allow you to choose the colours of your liking and also to override any colours specified by a site.

  1. Open the Tools menu with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+T).

  2. Select the Internet Options option with the mouse (or by pressing O).

  3. Select the Accessibility button with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+E).

  4. Check the "Ignore colors specified on web page" checkbox with the mouse (or by pressing alt+C). NB: this will change the colour of most elements of a page possibly including things like navigational elements. If you do not tick this box some parts of some pages may not change.

  5. Select the OK button once with the mouse (or by pressing Enter).

  6. Select the Colors button with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+O).

  7. You can choose to have your Windows colour scheme reflected by selecting the "Use Windows color scheme" option with the mouse (or by pressing Alt+W). Or...

  8. With the "Use Windows color scheme" option unchecked, click on the coloured box next to the Text or Background option and choose an alternative colour, or press Tab until the Text or Background color box is highlighted, press the space bar, use the arrow keys to choose an alternative colour and press space to select it.
