  1. County Council is the Local Education Authority (LEA) for Hampshire.  Works with schools, voluntary organisations and the public and private sector - to ensure a) their full involvement in education policy, b) that education views are represented in other forums and planning processes.  Education Dept works with the district councils in social inclusion, crime & disorder, early education & childcare and community education programmes.

  2. Provides services and information about services; assessments of what help people need; assessments of whether people can be registered as disabled; protection for children at risk.

  3. Registers and inspects Care homes (previously called residential & nursing homes) and providers of 'care at home'.

  4. Hampshire Constabulary is responsible for operational policing.and includes Criminal Investigation Dept (CID).  Supports development of Neighbourhood Watch schemes; member of 'Southern Region Crimestoppers'.  District councils have statutory responsibility to work closely with police and others in 'Community Safety' partnerships (see ‘broader partnerships and strategies’ section).

  5. Hampshire Police Authority is an independent body ensuring that policing service provided by Hants Constabulary is both efficient and effective; acts as link between local people, the Chief Constable and the Home Office.  9 of the 17 members are councillors, appointed to reflect the political balance of Portsmouth & Southampton, Hants and Isle of Wight
