Celebrating Good Neighbours Awards

Hampshire County Council’s Celebrating Good Neighbours Young and Old Awards recognise and reward volunteers and neighbours who support others in their communities.

Celebrating Good Neighbours Young and Old – Awards 2013/2014

Do you know someone who makes a difference to you or your community? Would you like to nominate them for an award?

This year, the Council is especially keen to ensure that the awards celebrate the contribution of both young and older people. The awards give you the opportunity to pay tribute to a person or a group who has demonstrated exceptional and outstanding achievements within their local community during 2013.

Perhaps you know a neighbour or volunteer(s), of any age, who gave that extra bit of help to you to make your life easier, or who makes your community a better place in which to live. In fact, any regular act of kindness for someone else could qualify.

This is your chance to say thank you to them:

Good Neighbour Awards - 2012/2013

Neighbours who go that extra mile have been thanked at Hampshire County Council’s ninth Good Neighbour Awards.

Hosting the ceremony in the Great Hall, Winchester, Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber CBE, led the tributes to the vital support provided by 54 extra special friends, neighbours and community groups.

Cllr Thornber said: “The awards recognise and reward volunteers and neighbours who support others in their communities. It is heart warming to hear how neighbours are there for each other.”

For example, one of the oldest members of the Maddhat Shamuha group, gives his time and energy encouraging others and diligently attending events to support the wider local community, and two over 80 year olds still volunteer at local luncheon clubs.

“Olive gives invaluable services to our local village hall, running coffee mornings, contributing time and produce at the village market to raise funds, baking cakes for charity, organising events – she brings together the isolated.”

“Sheila is one in a million, without her help and friendship my mother could not remain independent.” Is part of the citations for both Olive and Sheila.

“I wish to congratulate all of this year’s nominees who have helped change peoples lives and make simple day to day tasks achievable. All too often good deeds go unnoticed so it is such a great honour to take this opportunity to recognise their efforts”, added Cllr Thornber.

The awards were organised in partnership with: Age Concern Hampshire, Brendoncare Club Hampshire, Carers Together, Good Neighbours Support Service and WRVS.
