Burials
In churchyards
These are noted in parish registers. We have a CD-ROM of burials in Hampshire churchyards 1400-1837, which is also available to purchase from Hampshire Genealogical Society.
In cemeteries
Winchester (West Hill) was established in 1840 by a private company but most cemeteries were set up after the 1853 Burial Act by local authorities. Records are usually held by local councils but we hold microfiche copies of many cemetery registers.
Search online for
- burials in Bishopstoke, Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh cemeteries
- burials in Fareham, Locks Heath, Portchester, Sarisbury, Stubbington and Titchfield cemeteries
Monumental inscriptions
Monumental inscriptions of gravestones and plaques in churchyards and cemeteries may also include grave locations and are often indexed. We hold many of these as printed lists in our search room and they include some for Portsmouth and Southampton cemeteries.
Plans of burial grounds
Parish registers occasionally give grave plot numbers; cemetery registers usually do. We hold a few plans of churchyards and cemeteries showing grave positions. Plans are also sometimes included in monumental inscriptions lists.
We do not hold
