Art commissioning

Why work with artists?

Artists can bring a different creative vision and inject new ideas into many projects, from small scale to major capital schemes as part of a design team. They can facilitate consultation and contribute to new developments, enhancing a sense of place and contributing effectively to community cohesion. A commission could be as simple as employing one artist to produce a single painting or sculpture for one site to a project involving several artists from a range of art-forms working simultaneously on a number of aspects of a major development.

In some ways working with an artist is similar to working with any other contractor but in other ways it can be quite different. The creative process is dynamic and the outcome may evolve or change as the project progresses. Sound and agreed structures to support the work give confidence to both commissioner and artist to allow the space for the creative process to develop.

Artists can enable people to realise their own creativity building a sense of ownership and pride in the places where they live. They can also provide you with a made to measure site specific piece which gives you everything you need for the space, the user, the audience and your own vision.

It also meets corporate objectives.  Art isn’t only about aesthetics or a luxury add on – it in itself delivers directly on enhancing our quality of place and in maximising wellbeing.  Using art as a vehicle to deliver our objectives, reinforce our message or engage with our residents are strong arguments for embracing this toolkit and aiming for the highest quality possible.

“Far from being an optional extra, good public art engenders a sense of place, contributes to everything that makes us human and demonstrates our commitment to making our environment a desirable place to be”
