Admission to school

How applications are processed

Hampshire County Council's co-ordinated scheme  Download Adobe Reader to view this PDF 62kB describes how applications are processed in the main admission round. Each school’s admission policy sets out how applications will be prioritised if the school receives more applications than places available.

How applications are considered

All on-time applications (received by the published deadline) will be considered together. The application form allows the applicant to name up to three schools, in preference order. If the process results in more than one of the parent's preferred schools being able to offer a place, reference will be made to the parent's preference order and the highest ranked of those schools will be offered. If none of the schools named can offer a place, the catchment or nearest school with a place will be allocated. Each child will be allocated only one school place.

Example of allocation

Parent applies for

1. School A

2. School B

3. School C

School A is oversubscribed so admissions policy is used to allocate places. The pupil doesn’t come high enough in the school's admissions criteria to be allocated a place. School B is under subscribed so a place can be offered at School B. School C is oversubscribed but the pupil is high in relation to the school's admissions criteria so a place can be offered at School C. As School B is parent/carer's 2nd preference, a place is allocated at School B as this is the highest possible offer that can be made.

What to do if an application is unsuccessful

If your application is unsuccessful, your child's name will automatically be added to the waiting list of any Hampshire school ranked higher on your application than the school you have been allocated a place at. You will also have the right of appeal to an independent appeal panel against the decision to refuse your child a place. Further information about the appeals process can be found in the appeals section.

Waiting lists

Waiting lists for all oversubscribed schools will be established two weeks after the notification date. Each list will include all applicants who were refused a place at the school and were not offered a higher preference school. Parents wishing their child to be added to the waiting list of a lower preference school named in the application must submit a late application. Please refer to each school's admission policy for details of how their waiting list is operated. Children will remain on the waiting list until 31 August 2017. Parents wising to remain on the waiting list for the following academic year (2017/2018) will need to re-apply for a place during August 2017. Please refer to the 'waiting lists' page for further details.

If at any point you are offered a place from the waiting list at one of your preferred schools, your original offer will be automatically withdrawn. It is important therefore that you notify the school if you no longer wish to be on the waiting list.

Making a new application after receiving the notification decision

After receiving the outcome of your application, if you wish to apply to a lower pference school or any new schools that were not named on your original application, you will need to make a late application. Late application forms will be available from any Hampshire school or from this website. Any offer of a school place made as a result of a late application will result in the automatic withdrawal of any previous offer.
