Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Making a referral to Hampshire EMTAS

Schools should ring the New Arrivals Manager at the Basingstoke Office as soon as they receive, or know they are about to receive, a pupil for whom English is an additional language.

If you prefer, you can send us the information using a new arrival referral form Microsoft Word 28kB.

We do not take referrals from parents nor do we need their contact information unless they need to be contacted by a Bilingual Assistant to discuss a forthcoming early profiling visit.

What we will ask for

We will need basic information on the pupil:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • year group
  • language
  • ethnic origin
  • date of arrival in the UK
  • date when the pupil is going to start at the school
  • any relevant information on previous education and language acquisition.

You will also need to nominate a School Contact Person with whom Hampshire EMTAS can liaise.

Early profiling visit

Within two weeks of making a referral, you will be contacted by a bilingual assistant or specialist teacher to arrange a time for an early profiling visit. During this visit, background information will be gathered and an assessment will be made of the pupil's language skills in first language(s) and in English. You will receive a written Early Profiling Report containing all the information gathered during the visit.
