Free internet and WiFi

Using your own laptop

You can now access the Internet for free on your own laptop, PDA or mobile phone with built in WLAN capability or an added WiFi card when visiting the Discovery Centre.

How to get connected

Please ask for the network password at the Help Desk. Our staff can show you how to log on for the first time but they cannot assist you in setting up WiFi access on your PC. You are responsible for setting up your own equipment.

What you can do when you are connected

You will have the same Internet access; email, messaging and searching as somebody using a People's Network computer.

You will be able to access the Reference Library Online, including the Oxford Reference Online, Britannica Online and NewsUK (but not Ancestry.com) with a library card.

Using our People's Network computers

There are 33 People's Network computers for high speed access to the internet. It is safe and secure. You can send email and use software to make your own documents, presentations, spreadsheets and pictures. It's free to use.

You can choose a quick use computer for 30 minutes or a bookable computer for longer. We also have a colour laser printer and scanners which will enable you to print good quality images. Each computer also has software to help people with a visual or a hearing impairment.

You don't need to book, however to guarantee a session it is best to do so. You can book in person using one of the machines or by phone, tel 0845 603 5631, quoting your library card number. You will need a library card to make a booking.


The Gosport Discovery Centre offers free wireless Internet access to patrons using their laptop computers or other mobile devices.

The following conditions must be accepted before users may access the Internet

By choosing to use this free wireless service you agree to abide the People’s Network Acceptable Use Policy Download Acrobat Reader to view this PDF 38kb which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library’s Internet service.

It is the responsibility of the user to understand these policies and their obligation to refrain from viewing inappropriate websites, spamming or any illegal activities.

The Library service assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Discovery Centre’s network.

It is solely the responsibility of the wireless device owner/user to provide antivirus protection, and to configure their laptop/PDA settings to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the Discovery Centre and the Internet itself. The Library Service cannot and will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.

The Discovery Centre’s staff cannot provide technical assistance to patrons using the wireless network. Discovery Centre staff cannot configure your laptop, wireless adapter or mobile device.

The wireless signal is at its maximal strength on the 2nd floor of the Discovery Centre. However, no guarantee is provided that you will be able to make a wireless connection.

Printing is not available over the wireless network.

The Discovery Centre reserves the right to refuse access to its wireless network at any time.

Please do not leave your laptop, PDA or other device unattended at any time.
