The Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants

There is one Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants (DLs). On average there is one Deputy Lieutenant for 25,000 people living within the county. The number appointed is based on the County population (including the Unitary Authorities of Portsmouth and Southampton).

The Lord-Lieutenant appoints the Deputies and in doing so recognises their contribution to local, county or national life.

The role of a Deputy is to support and promote the Lieutenancy in Hampshire and to represent the Lord-Lieutenant in performing a range of public duties when required. Deputies do not receive remuneration for undertaking duties on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant and their service to the county is entirely voluntary.
