Highway Maintenance

Street Lighting

Updated June 2015

In Hampshire there are over 154,000 street lights, illuminated signs and traffic bollards.

Street lighting is provided in all our urban areas to help reduce the risk of night-time injury road accidents, reduce crime and the fear of crime. Generally all of our lights operate throughout the hours of darkness but we do dim our lights to help reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

" "

All of our lights use the most energy efficient lamps and are designed to cast light down and forward onto the ground rather then upwards into the night sky.
