Funding support

Sport Hampshire & IOW is commited to providing guidance and advice on funding and support to clubs, groups and individuals. These pages contain information on funding opportunities and include details about local and national resources.

In addition, Hampshire County Council and Sport Hampshire & IOW have a number of schemes designed to provide straightforward funding and support for local athletes and clubs, as well as coaches and volunteers. Other funding streams

  • Sports Aid - provides financial grants to athletes aged between 12 - 18 years old or up to 35 years old for disability sports.
  • TASS - provides financial grants to athletes aged between 16 - 24 years old that are undertaking a recognised education programme registered at an Institution in England.
  • OCS Young Sports Person Awards provide financial grants to up and coming young sports people.
  • The Dickie Bird Foundation - provides financial grants for people under 18 from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • ASDA Sporting Chance - Supports athletes local to their stores in partnership with Sport Aid providing funds for training, equipment and travel.
 

Coaches seeking financial support to develop and improve their skills and qualifications should visit the Coaching Hampshire & IOW funding pages for advice and guidance on funding opportunities.

In addition, Hampshire-based coaches, officials and volunteers can apply for support through a Scholarship Scheme, run and adminstered by Coaching Hampshire & IOW. The Scheme is designed to target those coaches, officials and volunteers that have the most immediate impact on coaching and club sport delivery in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Pathways/support for disadvantaged young people in the age range 16 to 30 into education, training or employment.

Hampshire & IOW Community Foundation's focus their grant programmes on projects that help people to lead healthier lives, develop opportunities for playing sport, support persons in crisis or deliver employment and training opportunities.
The grant programmes will give priority to projects that support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people including young people, children, families, older people, disabled groups, and those suffering isolation and deprivation

Hampshire Playing Fields Association

The Hampshire Playing Fields Association (HPFA) was established in 1926 to improve sports, recreational and children’s play facilities within Hampshire, by advising and supporting parish/town councils and voluntary clubs and groups by distributing grants and low interest loans. Hampshire County Council Community Challenge Fund

The Community Challenge Fund is a one-off grant scheme by Hampshire County Council for projects by rural communities which help improve local quality of life. Grants of up to £2,500 are available, but you do have to provide match funding. Some of the match funding can be ‘in kind’ e.g. as volunteer time

Torch Trophy Trust Bursaries

The aim of the Trophy Torch Bursary is to help volunteers to improve their skills as coaches or officials but are unable to do so without funding.

In most cases, the minimum Bursary would be £100 and the maximum £1000 and it would not be for more than 50% of the total costs involved. Exceptional applications may be considered for grants outside these guidelines.

Sported

Sported is the leading UK sport for development charity. They have 2 grants available, however in order to apply you must sign up as a member of their charity, (this is free).  The 2 grants available are:

  • Small grant - up to £2,000. This one-off grant is available to all Members, with applications being reviewed every 3 months.

  • Large grant - most of the grants that they award are for between £2,000 and £10,000. They do occasionally award larger amounts, but this will involve a longer process.

Sported will consider funding salaries, running costs/overheads and programme delivery costs. They will also consider supporting projects for more than one year, but funding will always be offered as part of a wider support package to ensure the ongoing development of your project or organisation. Generally they will not help fund large capital expenses such as building facilities.

Women's Sport Trust

The Women's Sport Trust invests money that will help improve and support women's sport. They have a flexible approach to what can be funded and applied for, and they will consider applications from mainstream or minority sports.

Sports Match

The Sport England Sportsmatch programme increases investment in community sport by matching new sponsorship money pound for pound. They can match sponsorship which has been given to an eligible sports body by a company, trust, charity, or private individual to fund projects that promote new participation at grassroots level.

Cash 4 Clubs

Cash 4 Clubs is a simple scheme aimed at giving community clubs a helping hand and provide the opportunity to raise the money they need to invest in their club.

Small Grants Scheme

Sport England have set up a small grants programme to support local community sport projects which seek to increase participation, sustain participation or develop opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.  The grant is open to any bona fide not-for-profit club or association, statutory body or educational establishment.

Tesco Charity Trust

The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £1,000 and £4,000. The funding can go towards providing practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit children, the elderly and adults and children with disabilities, living in the local communities around Tesco stores in the UK. There are 4 deadlines for the fund:
Grants for Children's Education and Childrens Welfare - 31 January and 30 June
Grants for elderly people and adults and children with disabilities - 31st March and 30 September.

Waitrose Community Matters

Give grants to good causes affecting communities within which they have a branch (voted for by Waitrose customers each month).

Santander Foundation

Grants are available for community groups that are registered as a charity. Grants can be used for salaries, equipment or materials.

BBC Children in Need – General Grants

This grant programme is open to organisations working with disadvantaged children and young people who are 18 years old and under.

Your organisation and project must be based in the UK and you need to be a registered charity or other not-for-profit organisation.

The next deadline is April 2013, after this the grants are being updated and further deadlines will be release in February 2013

Football Projects

The Football Foundation is the UK’s largest sports’ charity. Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Foundation directs £40m every year into grass roots sport. They have several different grants that cover facility projects, projects that aim to increase participation by both players and volunteers or projects that use football and sport to create opportunities and build communities.

Hilden Charitable Fund

Hilden provide grants to projects that support; Homelessness, Penal Affairs, Asylum Seekers and Refugees, and Community Based initiatives for Disadvantaged Young People Aged 16 to 25. The next deadline is December 14 2012

Boost Charitable Trust

Provides grants for charities and non profit making organisations who run activities which aim to inspire disabled and disadvantaged people through sport.

Up to £500

Peter Harrison Foundation

Applicants must be registered charities or CASCs. Grants are made for projects which help disabled or disadvantaged people fulfil their potential through sport (capital projects are eligible).

No upper limit

Co-operative Membership Community Fund

Award grants for projects that enhance local communities.  Grant can be used for anything from equipment to event costs, help towards rent or fixtures, sport or computer equipment.

Grow Your Club

The Isle of Wight Council Sports Development Unit has secured funding to help local sports clubs and organisations develop a local Olympic legacy. Grants can be used for projects that increase participation, organise competitions and develop coaches and volunteers

Community Amateur Sports Club Scheme (CASC)

Amateur sports clubs can take advantage of valuable tax relief and Gift Aid on voluntary donations by registering as a CASC.

Just Giving

JustGiving for sports clubs will help club members to raise more money, and claim Gift Aid, using the same award-winning tools as the biggest charities in the UK. JustGiving have dropped their subscription fees – worth £180 per year for all sports clubs that are registered as a Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs).

Fundrazor

Fundrazor have teamed up with leading entertainment partners and venues across the UK to supply unbeatable ticket offers for fundraising groups. All the tickets are cut-price, the tickets you buy can all be sold on to family and friends for the full price and all the money you raise you keep!

Recipric8

Recipric8 are a recycling company that focuses upon the recycling of consumer electronic equipment. This includes Mobile Phones, PDAs, MP3/4s, SatNavs, Ink Jet Cartridges & Toners, and similar products.

You gain Reciproc8 Points™ for the amount of consumer electronics goods that you collect for recycling. You can then redeem these Reciproc8 Points™ against a portfolio of sporting experiences and sports products.

Bags 4 Sport

Bags4Sport buy club members’ unwanted textiles. Also once your club has raised funds you can apply for a small grant of £500

Sport England have released a funding steam called the Community Sport Activation Fund, which has been developed to support grassroots activity at a local level.  Full details can be found below.

Funding for medium-sized projects that will improve the quality and experience of sport and is focused on helping more people acquire lifelong sporting habits. Round two will be open soon.

Sport England Community Activation Fund

This fund can go towards projects that will run for up to three years, the kind of projects that can apply include:

  • Activities reflecting a broad range of sports
    Informal opportunities which could lead to regular participation

  • Multi-sport activities which provide people with a range of choices and opportunities to suit them

  • Family orientated activities with a focus on 14 plus age group

  • Local activator roles that focus on directly organising and delivering new opportunities for participation

The next funding round will open on 7 May 2013 and close on 1 July 2013.  Future funding round dates include:
November 2013 – January 2014
May 2014 – June 2014
April 2015 – June 2015

£50,000 - £250,000 (partnership funding is required)

Protecting Playing Fields

The programme will fund capital projects that create, develop and improve playing fields for sporting and community use and offer long term protection of the site for sport.
Projects are likely to involve the construction of new pitches or improvement of existing ones that need leveling or drainage works. The programme only supports the following sports:
Football, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, softball/baseball, american football, gaelic football, australian rules football, hockey, hurling, lacrosse, polo and rounders.
Round 4 will open on 10 December 2012 and close on 18 February 2013

Up to £50,000

Inspired Facilities Fund

The Inspired Facilities fund could help you refurbish or upgrade your sports facility; or convert an existing building into a venue suitable for sport and accessible to the whole community.
The fund will invest in most types of improvement or refurbishment work that will help your club develop sport in your local area. To qualify for a grant you will need to:

  • Show how your project will keep and, ideally, attract more people to sport

  • Demonstrate that it is needed and wanted by the local community

  • Explain how it will cover its running costs and remain open for sporting use for years to come

The next funding round will open on 4 March 2013

£20,000 to £50,000

Iconic Facilities Fund

Sport England's Iconic Facilities Fund draws on the inspirational pull of London 2012 to create local beacons for grassroots sport. They are investing £30m over the next three years in innovative, large-scale, multi-sport facilities' projects that are regionally significant for at least two sports and can demonstrate long-term financial viability. Applications must be submitted by an organisation in England entitled to receive public funding such as sports clubs, voluntary or community organisations, local authorities and education establishments.
The next deadline for applications is Monday 17 December.  There will be another round open later on in 2013.

Sita Trust Enhancing Communities Programme

This fund supports projects that make physical improvements to community leisure facilities and historic buildings / structures.

Not-for-profit organisations including community groups, parish councils, local authorities and charities can apply.

They have 2 funds;

  • Grants of up to £60,00 for projects costing no more than £250,00

  • Grants of up to £20,000 for projects costing no more than £40,000

Sports partnership funding for voluntary bodies and other organisations

The application procedure for funding has now become centralised within Hampshire County Council and there are now six different grant streams which cultural, community and recreational organisations can apply for, ranging from revenue grants to small activity grants. There are grants available to support organisations that wish to make major changes to the way they currently operate.

Culture and Community Activity Grants

This grant will can be up to £5,000 and is largely for organisations to directly provide opportunities for individuals and communities to participate in community-focused, cultural and recreational activities.

There are 3 opportunities a year to apply for Culture and Community Activity Grants the next one is 1 November 2012 to be awarded funding for projects starting in February 2013 or April 2013, the next chance to apply will be 1 May 2013 for projects commencing in August 2013.

Culture and Recreation Investment Fund

The Culture and Recreation Investment Fund provides support for a programme of investment in the strategic cultural and recreational infrastructure within Hampshire.  For example supporting countywide Sports Governing Bodies and organisations.

The Culture and Recreation Investment Fund is an annual programme and has one round per year it is open for applications from 1 April to 1 October. To apply for funding for 2013/14 you need to make your application no later than 1 October 2012.
