Recycling
Some suggestions for recycling other materials:
Catering and grounds waste:
Green grounds waste, eg grass cuttings and hedge trimmings, and raw vegetable kitchen waste can be composted in the school grounds or your Grounds Maintenance Contractor may take it to one of Hampshire's central composting facilities; you could check this.
NB: Cooked and non-vegetable waste should not be composted; it should be put out for your general waste collection. Talk to your caterer about reducing the amount your school produces; using the HC3S pre-ordering system saves fuel for cooking and wasted food.
Fridges and freezers:
County Supplies has an arrangement with SITA to collect fridges and freezers, for a charge. Contact Julie Price on 01962 826910
Mobile phones:
Oxfam runs a mobile phone collection service, and also provides information about running a bring scheme at your school.
Printer Cartridges:
Alphastream International Limited collects and recycles printer cartridges
Tel: 01634 868824
Fax: 01634 868857
e-mail: alpha@alphastream.co.uk
Web address: www.alphajet.co.uk
Oxfam also collects printer cartridges for recycling.
Or, you could contact Office Green on 0800 833480, and request an information pack. They offer a free collection scheme for 10 laser cartridges or 20 inkjet cartridges, and supply collection boxes. They also provide freepost envelopes for return of up to 3 inkjet cartridges. Products are assigned a points value (this equates to £1 per point). Points list is available on request, and is updated every month; your school, or a charity of your choice can benefit from the points scheme.
Vending machine cups:
Save-a-Cup will provide a free collection service and recycle all hard walled plastic cups, if storage bins are purchased. More details from www.save-a-cup.co.uk.
It would be better to encourage use of washable cups or reusable drinking bottles, instead of plastic cups.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
County Supplies has made an arrangement with Seek-it, a Hampshire-based company which reuses and recycles WEEE. The scheme is designed to provide Hampshire County Council/Southampton City Council Schools and interested departments with a low cost disposal solution for their surplus to ITC and other WEEE. It is aimed primarily at organisations that have a minimum of 5 surplus monitors and 5 keyboards for disposal per collection, but if you have less than this, you could contact Seek-it for other solutions.
