As well as serving the residential and business areas of the Gosport peninsula, Eclipse connects the thriving towns of Fareham and Gosport, linking to onward travel by bus, rail or sea.
Fareham town centre
In medieval times a flourishing south coast port, Fareham was at the centre of the ship-building industry by the 18th Century and grew rapidly during the next century to serve the Royal Navy.
Other industries also prospered, including brick-making: the famous ‘Fareham Red’ bricks can be seen today in many of the town centre’s fine Georgian houses as well as landmarks like the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Fareham also played a major role in the industrial revolution thanks to local ironmaster Henry Cort. Today, Fareham has a thriving and attractive town centre with a museum, entertainment complex, indoor shopping mall and regular market.
Fareham railway station
With direct rail links to London via Eastleigh and to Salisbury, Bristol and Wales in the west and Brighton in the East, Fareham railway station is about 15 minutes walk from the centre of town and is served by the Eclipse buses.
Gosport town centre
With its rich maritime heritage, Gosport was a major naval and military town until the end of the last century. Today it offers a variety of leisure, cultural, shopping and employment opportunities.
Located on the south coast and surrounded by sea, Gosport has more sunshine each year than most of the rest of the UK and attracts thousands of tourists in the summer months.
Gosport has 24 miles of waterfront, including three marinas and some stunning beaches. The area is enjoying significant regeneration which reflects its new status as a business enterprise zone.
The popular Gosport ferry bridges the gap between the City of Portsmouth and Gosport in just four minutes, and has been serving commuters and tourists since 1883.
The service runs 364 days a year and provides a great link for anyone living in Fareham or Gosport who wants to travel to London by train from Portsmouth Harbour. Through-ticketing is available from rail and bus operators.
