Walking in Hampshire

Forton Loop - A stroll around Longparish

Forton is a pretty hamlet off the main road to Longparish that has many thatched cottages. The ‘Test Way’ long distance walking route passes through the hamlet.

Park in the car park by the village hall, not far from the Plough Inn. Take a chance to visit the church before continuing along the path to the second lychgate, which was provided to rest coffins on from Forton (this short section follows the Test Way). From the meadow you can see Middleton House on your right, just before you approach Forton Lane. You can glimpse the River Test down on your left.

Cottages on the Forton Loop route

Continue onto Forton Lane, passing through this lovely hamlet, following the waymarks that continue for the Test Way. Forton Lane turns right and leads up to the main road, at this point cross over, taking care as you cross to the footpath on the left hand corner of the field. Cross diagonally up to the belt of trees on your left, where two paths join, take the path off to the left over the disused railway line and across open fields, which are known locally as Cutty Brow, where you may hear skylarks above the A303.

The route’s furthest point is a group of beech trees on the Middleway, beautiful at any time of year. At the road (The Middleway) turn right and continue along the road with wonderful views across the landscape. At the bend take the footpath on your right known locally as Broadney path, continue along this to the road, cross over with care and take the minor lane at the bottom. Turn left to retrace your steps back to the car park.
