Trench Coat : From Field to Fashion
4 October – 21 December 2014
The story of the trench coat reaches back into history. In the centenary year of the First World War we can reflect on its military connections and its signature qualities which have endured over a century. Introduced by Hilary Alexander OBE, the exhibition will chart key directional moments illustrated by original garments.
The exhibition features the exclusive display of an authentic WWI cavalry trench coat, and the coat worn by Marlene Dietrich in the film A Foreign Affair. We will explore great filmic moments and significant style influencers to tell the ever-evolving story of a coat which has survived its utilitarian roots to become an iconic fashion garment.
