The Church

Notable collections include

  • Winchester Cathedral Dean and Chapter, which has deposited mainly sound recordings of historical plays by the Cathedral Players
  • St Mary's Church, Southampton, whose destruction in the Blitz and restoration is chronicled on film. BBC Radio Solent recorded a number of interesting religious topics and sounds, including church bells, and series like Ring in Sunday.

BBC South broadcast a series about towns and villages in the 1960s, called ABC, all of which featured the local places of worship. A Rector and his Parish concerns the installation of the new Rector of Corfe Castle in about 1948.

The Reverend Maber filmed his parishioners at Purbrook as they got married and baptised at St John the Baptist Church 1955-1974, and one included the May Queen ceremony. Mr C Harrison of Eastleigh Young Baptist Fellowship filmed their own social activities, between 1938 and 1959. Miss Eda Moore covered a range of activities connected to Salisbury Cathedral, from 1939 to the 1970s.
